PROGRAM NOTES
There is an anonymous soloist in Lecture for Jo Kondo. One we neither see nor hear. But one I sensed very deeply and allowed to guide me through the composition. It was something I could never directly state, but could only frame. As if one were to view an empty pedestal in an art gallery and could clearly sense the invisible object it held. We would know it, its size, shape, surface, weight and material by the atmosphere, size and architecture of the room and by the placement of the pedestal. In a similar way I knew and was haunted by this anonymous soloist, or voice, in Lecture. I couldn’t define it – but I could try to represent it, explore it, allow my perceptions about it to deepen, and coax it to reveal its secrets. I became the archeologist of this voice--dusting away centuries of sand, asking the same questions over and over, slowly discovering and unveiling its hidden world. I was never going to be able to define the voice itself and could only know it through its environment and artifacts. Lecture for Jo Kondo is the exploration through this environment; a collection of artifacts; everything but the voice--because there was no allegorical way to represent the real thing.

Absolutely love this recording. I listen to it at work. I listen to it in the car on the way home from work. I listen to it while falling asleep. Curtis’ cello is so amazing. Just got the vinyl in the mail from Discogs the other day! Can’t wait to play on my hi-fi system! Dave Sewall
